Occupational Based Counseling: An Approach to be Considered for Practice
Counseling is a skill which can be applied to any field to alleviate psychological sufferings, disturbances or disruptions occur in anyone's routine functions of life. Every individual might be engaged in any job or activity in continuance and long practice of such jobs develop an attachment or bond with the work one who practices. And they develop a sense of attachment or functional fixedness. While offering counseling, a counsellor need to identify and understand the client's occupation, its nature and how long the client practicing the job etc. Information to be collected about the occupation and the problems encountered by the client which might be directly or indirectly related to the profession should be analyzed in-depth before offering counseling. Further, facilitating to solve problems or overcome difficulty situation not only solves or alleviate personal problems but also solves the professional problems. And also results in enhancing professional outcome i. e job performance, job effectiveness and satisfaction. In medical and allied medical health practitioners also consider the profession in which the client is oriented and accordingly interventions to be implemented. And the process of intervention should not affect the client's profession rather it must enhance the client's personal and professional wellbeing.
